Cubs Punk A Coach -- Damn

Press Release on First Round Draft Pick From The Orioles...

The Orioles today selected LHP BRIAN MATUSZ with their first-round selection in the 2008 First Year Player Draft, taking the college junior with the 4th overall pick in the draft.

Matusz, 21, is a 6-foot-4, 200-pound left handed pitcher from Cave Creek, AZ. A three-year starter at the University of San Diego, he has gone 12-2 this season with a 1.71 ERA (105.0IP, 20ER) and 141 strikeouts.

In his three seasons with the Toreros, he is 26-8 with a 2.94 ERA (317.0IP, 101ER) in 48 games (45 starts) with 397 strikeouts. In 2007, Matusz was named a finalist for the Golden Spikes Award, given to the nation's best collegiate player. He was also named to the Wallace Award Watch list for the best collegiate player in the nation and the Roger Clemens Award Watch list, vying for the nation's best collegiate pitcher.

Matusz is a graduate of St. Mary's High School, where he earned two varsity letters and was named Arizona Player of the Year award along with! a Baseball America All-America distinction. Area scout Mark Ralston was responsible for his election.

The draft will continue until approximately 9 p.m. tonight before resuming tomorrow at 11:30 a.m. and will last up to 50 rounds. A full list of the Orioles selections will be available tomorrow night, following the conclusion of the draft.

Yes, America - The Rays Are Just One Game From the World Series...

Yes, America. It looks like the Tampa Bay Rays are just one win from making into their first ever World Series after having excatly zero winning seasons in their existence until this year.

I always knew the Rays would be close or finish slightly above .500; however, if anyone says they expected them to win 97 games and be one step away from the World Series, I would suggest you start playing the Lottery.

The Rays bushwhacked the Red Sox in Game Four of the ALCS, 13-4. There was not much to be said for last night if you're a Boston fan -- Wakefield got his arse kicked, despite having 16 days of rest and Tampa outplayed them.

For everyone that's shocked -- don't be. Being an Oriole fan, I have seen enough of the Rays to contend they are for real. I thought the Red Sox would come back and mount a challenge, but now they are looking lost on the mound and the plate (especially David Ortiz, Ellsbury, and ugh -- Varitek), while the Rays look young, ! energized and not stressed at all.

Homers by Willy Aybar, Carl Crawford (who was 5 for 5) -- and yes, Longoria -- again, led Tampa to victory. They had an offensive onslaught that the Red Sox have not been able to match, and Andy Sonnastine's golden arm led them to victory.

It was weird seeing a quiet Fenway, and it looks like despite the grea job Francona has done managing Boston, they are just no match -- literally -- for the Rays.

If there's any solace in seeing the Rays in the series after all theor losing for the past decade, it gives teams like the Orioles, Pirates, Royals, Nationals and Reds hope. You need a little bit of luck, but a whole lot of planning, great management and a commitment to development to get to the next level.

Another case study: the Brewers.

Money can help solve and cover up some problems (ala the Yankees); however, you need a plan and you need to stick with it, no matter how tough or rough t! he road may be.

Buster Olney and His Take on The Orioles and Nationals Pursuit of Teixeira...

This morning, ESPN's Buster Olney posted a sobering piece on his blog about both the Baltimore Orioles and Washington National pursuit of free agent Mark Teixeira.

He thinks that both teams with state that their organizations are in have no business in bidding for the slugger. As much as I would like to disagree with his assessment, he's right.
ESPN.com: But what in the heck are the Nationals doing in this poker game? What in the heck are the Orioles doing in this conversation?

They should not be bidding. They should call Scott Boras, the agent for Teixeira, three minutes ago and tell him -- like someone who accidentally raises his hand at an auction -- Look, sorry for the misunderstanding, but we made a mistake. We really didn't mean to make that $160 million offer.

Maybe in three years, when some of Washington'! s young pitching talent starts to make an impact at the major league level, it would make sense for the Nationals to bid on a player like Teixeira. Maybe in three years, it would make sense for the Orioles to consider such an enormous contract. But not now, not when both teams are miles away from contending, not when they need a whole lot more than Teixeira.
At yesterday's Raven's game, I was talking to my buddy about this very topic and our sentiments mirrored what Olney said.

Getting Mark would be nice -- however, I have always stated that the slugger is not what the Orioles need. Do we want him in a Baltimore jersey? Sure. At 20 million plus per year annually for close a decade - no.

Granted, I know the Orioles want to bring him back home because of the hometown connection and obviously his skills; however, the team has so many holes that I don't know if signing Teixeira is feasible.

There are many ways to improve the Baltimor! e Orioles; therefore, I think the most prudent way would be to! stockpi le as many draft picks as possible, foster your young talent, and then keep the guys who know who will be a part of the core of the major league team as long as possible.

Now, the latter part of Olney's argument centers around Mark's appeal to fans versus winning.
And I can say the following confidently, having worked as a sportswriter in Baltimore and having some understanding of the multilayered depth of knowledge in the Orioles' fan base: Until the team starts winning again, nobody will show up at Camden Yards. Signing Teixeira would not draw the the O's demonstrably closer to contending because they are so short in starting pitching. In fact, the signing of the first baseman could ultimately hurt them, because in two or three years, as the Orioles' young pitching begins to rise to the big leagues and the team needs pieces to augment the improved rotation, Teixeira's salary would restrict the kinds of moves the Orioles will make.

The! Twins have shown all midmarket and big-market teams that you need to be patient and that you cannot be successful when you have a payroll structure that's top-heavy with a high-salaried big name. The Indians have demonstrated this, too, and so have the Athletics.

No, the table at which the Nationals and Orioles are playing right now is just pricey, and they should excuse themselves and spend their money on young pitching -- whether through the draft or through international signings -- and wait until the time is better. To do anything else is nothing less than lunacy.
Again, I agree with Buster here. The argument I hear often in bringing Teixiera back as well is, "oh, we have to bring himback -- he'll fill the stands, get us proud of our hometown, and lure free agents in."

Of course people mention, "well, we have to show Boston and New York that we mean business..."

Mark may cause an uptick in attendance; however, the only way t! o sustain it and keep fans coming back is to create a winning ! product, and keep the machine running as long as possible.

I know the fan base has plummeted, and he'll get people interested in Baltimore baseball when the season begins (assuming he even signs with Baltimore); however, if the Orioles are 20 games under .500 in September, the love affair will become muddied with the fact that the team is only marginally better with Teixeira on it.

If the team doesn't improve -- what happens in year two, year four (assuming there's not an opt-out clause?)

Another thing to ponder -- look at what happened with the teams who brought hometown faces home -- the Mets with Bobby Bonilla, the Reds with Ken Griffey, the Dodgers with Darryl Strawberry.

Now Strawberry had problems, but the point I'm trying to make is that a beautiful homecoming for a gifted player can be fleeting, unless you have a competitive team around that player. Baltimore and Washington fit that category; however, Boston, New York and Los Angel! es don't.

Again, I'd love to see him in a Baltimore uniform, but not at this cost. You have to take risks to build a winning a team, but you have to be careful what you do.

Yahoo Previews The Baltimore Orioles...

Here's yet another Orioles 2009 preview, this time from Yahoo's Gordon Edes.

He, much like most of the media, pundits and fans project a last place finish for Baltimore. The article isn't too long, covers the bases and mentions pretty much all know already.

Something Is Down & Dirty in Washington

I feel for Nationals fans. They should not have to endure what's going on with their team.

It looks like some heads will definitely roll in Washington D.C. not for anything political, related to the economy or for anything else other than yet another baseball scandal. It's going to be interesting how this team handles this situation considering the amount of money given to a prospect -- a whopping $1.4 million -- who suddenly aged four years and who is someone else all together.

Now, the federal government is investigating general manager and team vice president Jim Bowden and several others in their role in this whole scandal.

Does anyone smell a conspiracy?

Changes, Changes and Ozzie-Ball Comes To Town...

It's no surprise that Lou Montanez and Brad Bergesen were recalled from Triple-A after Ryan Freel headed to the disabled list after being in the head and Radhames Liz was sent after back-to-back performances in the big leagues.

Lou Montanez -- who probably should have been rightfully brought up to the majors to begin with -- should be perhaps be the 4th outfielder, or come off and serve as a pinch hitter. The boy can hit, and did his job well in Spring Training; therefore, let's hope he stays up in Baltimore in the long term.

Meanwhile, Bergesen will start against the White Sox tonight. A lot of fans have been clamoring about him, and he does one good thing well -- throw strikes and pitch to contact; however, his problem is that he doesn't throw hard. The fact he doesn't hard throw should not hinder him at all, but if he's not on -- the scoreboard could get ugly.

4th Annual Brian's Baseball Bash - Photos and Mini Report

Rest of Photo Set: Click Here

On Sunday night, baseball fans, kids, parents and strong contingent of Oriole players and staff got together at the ESPN Zone in Baltimore's Inner Harbor for the 4th annual "Brian's Baseball Bash" to benefit the University of Maryland Hospital for Children.

The popular restaurant was seemingly filled to the walls with people -- several hundred or so -- for the sold-out event that was far more laid-back and friendly; thus, it gave a chance for ardent Oriole fans a-once-in-a-lifetime chance to meet and mingle with their favorite players for three hours or so.

Walking the event, you could see Brian Roberts mingling with fans and well-wishers, or if you traveled a few feet in fron! t of you, Nick Markakis signed anything and everything; meanwhile, if you ventured upstairs, Orioles hurler Jeremy Guthrie was taking all-comers in basketball, and only a few feet away, you saw Jim Palmer and Dave Trembley at a bar minging with fans, taking pictures and signing autographs. Or if you turned in another direction, you saw Chris Ray playing games, Danys Baez chatting it with a small kid or uber-prospect Matt Wieters meeting a throng of people.

There was also an impressive display on the main floor with autographs of who's who of baseball – stuff from Alex Rodriguez, Ichiro Suzuki, Ryan Zimmerman and more – to bid on, as well as a live auction later on the event selling memorabilia and opportunities to learn from the pros on the team with one-on-one lessons.

As far as the eye could see, there were players, fans and a ton of food laid out immaculately everywhere; however, Brian's Baseball Bash is more than admirers celebrating their favorit! e players or getting an autograph or a picture, it's all about! a large r and vital cause -- improving the lives of sick children in the greater Baltimore metropolitan area and in the state of Maryland.

The event could not have been possible without Brian Roberts and it's one that's close to his heart – literally.

As most Oriole fans know who have attended a game or two within the past few years, he is known for spending some of his free time during season in Baltimore visiting sick children in the hospital and doing his part to lift their spirits. When Roberts was five years old, he had open heart surgery and despite it all, he beat the odds and has made a name for himself as one of the pre-eminent second baseman in the game; thus, as his career his taken off – he decided to give back to the community.

In a time where athletes have sometimes made headlines for all the wrong reasons, it's nice to see someone like Roberts and the Baltimore Orioles do their little part to improving the lives of many in the communit! y.

Liga Inggris 2009/2010 | Wenger Dituntut Raih Gelar

ArseneWenger

The Gunners gagal mendapatkan gelar sejak terakhir mereka memboyong Piala FA di 2005. Sedangkan di musim selanjutnya mereka menjadi runner up Liga Champions.

"Kami bicara mengenai kelompok potensial.

Comunque fatemi sapere. Al più presto.

Hamburg are in for Atouba

By Jaymes Payten - Marsh

Hamburg are willing to pay up to 1 million Euro's for the Cameroon international according to SkySports.

Tottenham's exiting sporting director, Frank Arnesen, had apparently sanctioned the deal with Hamburg, but since the recent upheaval at Tottenham, Hamburg have been left out of the loop.

The Bundesliga team are waiting for the situation at Tottenham to be sorted out before any concrete move for the player materialises.

Atouba is currently considering his options.

This is the best news I have heard in such a long time. As most of you know me from the Bigsoccer.com forums, I am not Atouba's biggest fan.

If Hamburg could also take Kanoute off our hands also, that would make my decade!

Who needs Arnesen to sanction these deals? I'll sanction them!

Song For Steo

By Molesy
For THBN

There are some that poo poo Spurs fans that remember where they came from. There are some so-called Spurs fans that poo poo where they are at present. I tend to grab every inch that is available to me and cherish it like my life depended on it.

When we lose, my 13-year old daughter will walk into my studio, where I sulk for hours, wearing my Le Coq Sportif home shirt from 82 and try and sing songs that I have taught her.

She has lived in the US since she was 3 and was even sent to speech therapy at school to get rid of her cockney accent so pupils and teachers could understand her, and it worked. Yet the one thing she would never let go of is her love for Spurs.

We have two sate! llite dishes, not to watch the latest British Idol but to have every bit of Spurs news and games and, oh yeah, Footballers Wives! Sorry.

She sat down with me last week and broke down every piece of the win against Lyon and was the first to point out to me that Lyon played Auxerre in their equivalent of the charity shield on Wednesday and we beat them three days before. It's her love for Spurs that scares her mother and me.

Her dog's name is "Ginny", named after Ginola. Her room has over two hundred pictures and articles of Spurs players and stories pinned to her walls and she has a pet hamster called Hoddle. My fault.

She walked into the studio while I was rehearsing with black tape depicting glasses on her face shouting "cheesy gloggs" after a discussion we had about Edgar Davids yesterday and I ne! ver laughed so much and as she left the room, I turned around ! back to my keys and I couldn't help but glance up at the wall and at the essay she had written about a famous person she was told to write about in her end of school exams. It was titled; Keith Burkinshaw. Scary really.

Her one dream is to watch a game at WHL even above the fact that she is rated one of the best young prospects in her field of sports in Florida. Intravenous Spurs I call it. As I write this, she keeps coming into the studio asking what the score is at Reading whilst singing, "there's only one Keano!" She knows that's going to annoy me because he's not playing until today and she knows this but Keane's her favorite player along with Steo because she thinks he's cute, but we have no song for Kelly.

So, after all this, anyone got a tune for Stephen Kelly, for my daughter Storm?

Spurs Sign Croatian Ace - More Players To Come!

Vedran Corluka, 22, has finally arrived at The Lane for a fee believed to be £8.5 million. Some sources claim that this deal was done weeks ago.

Whether or not it was done weeks ago is no concern of mine as all that matters right now, is that we get a balanced squad, that can gel quickly.

Corluka will slot in at right-back while Hutton recovers from his foot injury. The club said that they wouldn't rush Hutton back and the Scottish International could be out for a further 4 weeks.

The tall Croat defender can play anywhere across the back four, and in central midfield, although his best performances have come whilst playing for Croatia in a right wing-back position. He will provide the cover that has definitely been lacking.

The following players are also apparently on our radar before the close of the transfer window at midnight;

  • Maroune Fellaini (defensive midfielder, valued at £11 milli! on by his club, Standard Liege)
  • Miguel Veloso (defensive midfielder, valued at £15 million by his club Sporting)
  • Diego Milito (striker, valued at £7 million by Real Zaragoza)
  • Sergio Garcia (right winger/forward, valued at around £12 million by Real Zaragoza)
  • Frazier Campbell (striker, valued by Manchester United at £5 million)

Should be an interesting 10 hours! I feel that we will sign Diego Milito and either Fellaini or Veloso.

I can't see us signing Arshavin now.

COYS!!!

What's wrong with Dawson?

With the news that Bassong may be on his way to The Lane, the real question we should be asking is if another centre-back is needed?

I thought Michael Dawson's displays last season could have even merited him a place in the England team.

Hasn't the lad proved himself enough?

Is Bassong a better player? To be honest, I've not seen enough of the lad to comment, but I have see Dawson throw himself into countless challenges for the cause.

Do we need another centre-back?

Milan Seriusi Fabiano

Sejak ditinggalkan orang-orang penting di dalamnya, masa depan "I Rossoneri" menjadi penuh tanda-tanya.

Chelsea Tawarkan Dua Pemainnya Bagi Pirlo

Beckham Kembali Ke Milan Januari

Apalagi, ia meraih sukses bersama Rossoneri musim lalu. Sebelumnya, pelatih tim nasional Inggris Fabio Capello meminta Beckham untuk bermain di salah satu klub Eropa bila tetap ingin membela The Three Lions.

Nesta Serasa Terlahir Kembali

Silakan

MILAN - AC Milan dikabarkan tengah memantau Adriano demi menambah stok pemain lini depan mereka.
"Jika Milan memilih Adriano, mereka bebas saja melakukannya. Adriano bukan lagi pemain Inter," ungkap bos besar Inter, Massimo Moratti seperti diberitakan Football Italia.

Carling Cup round-up

Liverpool edged out Leeds 1-0, Arsenal prevailed 2-0 against West Brom, Sunderland beat Birmingham by the same scoreline and Bolton overcame West Ham after extra time.

Stoke saw off Blackpool in a seven-goal thriller, Blackburn won 1-0 at Nottingham Forest and Portsmouth saw off Carlisle.

Burnley provided the main story of last season's competition with a giant-killing run to the semi-finals but the roles were reversed for their clash against Championship strugglers Barnsley as they started the night firm favourites to progress to round four but ultimately came unstuck.

The Clarets, who lost Brian Jensen and Martin Paterson to injury, took the lead through Steven Fletcher but they were trailing 2-1 by half-time after goals from Jon Macken and Anderson De Silva.

Chris Eagles drew Burnley level at 2-2 in the 52nd minute but Barnsley were not to be denied and Hugo Colace popped up with the winner 15 minutes from time.

Jerma! ine Beckford had a goal controversially disallowed for offside early on as Leeds made a bright start at Elland Road against a Liverpool side showing nine changes from the weekend clash with West Ham.

Beckford then missed a couple of good chances in the second half before David Ngog's neat finish in the 66th minute silenced the home crowd and Liverpool held on for a hard-fought victory.

Arsene Wenger trumped Rafa Benitez by changing his entire starting XI and Arsenal's youngsters, who so often earn rave reviews for their Carling Cup performances, saw off Championship leaders West Brom at Emirates Stadium.

The Gunners' class of 2009/10 were made to work hard for their success despite West Brom being reduced to ten men when Jerome Thomas was sent off in the first half.

The highly-rated Sanchez Watt scored the crucial opening goal on 68 minutes and Carlos Vela struck again moments later as Arsenal moved into the next round.

Stoke have turned the Britannia Stadium into a formidable for! tress in the Premier League but they had to dig deep after Blackpool had produced a superb first-half performance to open up a 2-0 lead.

David Vaughan and Billy Clarke found the target either side of half-time to put the Seasiders in control before Liam Lawrence missed a glorious chance to reduce Stoke's arrears as Matthew Gilks kept out his penalty.

The Potters stormed back with a three-goal blitz in the space of five minutes thanks to Danny Higginbotham, Matthew Etherington and Ricardo Fuller but there was more drama still to come.

Ben Burgess scored to draw Blackpool level at 3-3 but Stoke responded again through Andy Griffin to seal a remarkable 4-3 victory.

Portsmouth made the long journey to Brunton Park desperate to avoid more disappointment following their torrid start to the Premier League season but they had to come from behind to beat League One outfit Carlisle 3-1.

Ian Harte fired the Cumbrians ahead from the penalty! spot on three minutes before Aruna Dindane, Danny Webber and Anthony Vanden Borre scored their first goals for Pompey to turn the game around.

Sunderland came out on top against Birmingham in an all-Premier League affair at the Stadium of Light, with the damage done by early goals from Jordan Henderson and Fraizer Campbell.

West Ham bowed out of the competition following a 3-1 extra time defeat to Bolton at the Reebok Stadium.

Herita Ilunga opened the scoring for The Hammers on 59 minutes but Kevin Davies levelled with just four minutes of normal time remaining.

Gary Cahill then gave the Trotters an advantage early in extra time and Johan Elmander stuck again in the 119th minute to clinch victory.

Benni McCarthy's 37th minute free-kick proved decisive for Blackburn at the City Ground as Nottingham Forest slipped to a 1-0 defeat.

Forest earned a penalty in the second half but Dexter Blackstock was unable to! beat Jason Brown as Rovers held on.

In the only al! l-Champi onship tie of the night, Peterborough proved too strong for Newcastle with a 2-0 victory at London Road.

Craig Mackail-Smith opened the scoring for Posh after 20 minutes and Tom Williams doubled their advantage 11 minutes later, while Danny Guthrie was sent off for the Magpies.

League Two side Port Vale, the lowest ranked team left in the competition, were knocked out by Scunthorpe after extra time at Glanford Park.

The scoreline was goalless after 90 minutes but Scunthorpe improved in extra time and ran out 2-0 winners courtesy of goals from Paul Hayes and Grant McCann.

Arsenal Siap Juara

SPAZIOMERCATO:MOURINHO ALL'INTER CON DROGBA E LAMPARD

Meglio tenerlo in disparte.

MILAN-INTER

LIPPI LANCIA ROSSI

FIRENZE - Gol e soprattutto maturità, a soli 21 anni.
